Question:
I HAVE A GUILD D-50
THAT AT
SOME POINT HAD THE NECK RE-GLUED. IN THE PROCESS OF DOING
THIS THEY GOT GLUE ON THE TOP OF THE GUITAR BY THE NECK. WHAT
DO YOU RECOMEND TO GET THIS OFF WITHOUT HURTING THE FINISH?
THANKS,
Johnny
That could be a serious problem if the glue dries for too
long. I am sure that it has cured for more than a day or
two. If you try to chisel it off on the Nitro lacquer that
guild uses it will chip off the finish as well. I can tell
you how we would take it off but I don't recommend this for a do it
yourself repair. I would use a scraper protecting the finish
on the guitar and scrape down the glue to the surface of the
lacquer. Then I would sand and water sand the remaining
residue off. Now you will have to take it too a buffer and
rebuff the area. Without a factory type buffer I would not
know how to make it look factory again. Remember that the
aliphatic resin base glues stick to lacquer quite well.
Removing cured set glue can remove the lacquer in chips as
well. If this glue spilled on a Japan or Korea instrument it
should flake right off.
